Savvy Scarves for a Chic Geek

Now that Old Man Winter is upon us, I am extremely excited to pull out my winter scarves. I myself am a scarf connoisseur – my secret is to buy beautiful and chic scarves, even if I can’t think of anything off the top of my head to wear with them. It forces me to think outside of the box when putting my outfit together because I have this really nice scarf that I’d like to wear, but I have no idea what to wear with it.

The first rule to being chic is to be different while being stylish. The first rule to being a geek is to be innovative. A scarf purchase is something that can never do you any harm. Regardless of your personal style, a scarf can turn any outfit into a masterpiece.

The Study Break: A Weekly List of Our Favorite Distractions

Check out these 5 links from some of our favorite blogs:

• Spring semester not only includes new classes and professors, but also New Year’s resolutions. If your college campus is anything like mine, your school’s gym is crowded with new gym-goers trying to achieve their goals of a healthier lifestyle, losing a few pounds, or getting ready for their tropical Spring Break destinations. My advice for this semester is to skip the line for the treadmill and try out a group fitness class! College Magazine agrees, in their article Dance Off The Freshman 15, they say, “In group workout classes, you have the friends, the music, the positivity and most importantly the fun. While you enjoy fist pumping at the trademark house parties on campus, why not fist pump and shed a few pounds in the process?” I couldn’t agree more! I recently signed up for a Zumba class, and in just 1 hour I burned over 500 calories while still feeling like I was at a party!

• A new semester also means the dreaded task of spending money on textbooks. However, for those of you that got an iPad for the holidays: you might be in luck. Apple announced last week the release of the new iBooks 2 App. In their article, What iBook Textbooks for iPad Mean for Students, HackCollege reviewed the app saying that, “it comes optimized for the new crop of textbooks that are starting to pop up in the iBookstore. Reading one of the iBookstore’s textbooks isn’t like reading a textbook off of any other e-reader. Publishers such as McGraw-Hill, Pearson Education, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt have created interactive, dynamic digital versions of their textbooks to take advantage of the multi-touch capabilities of the iPad 2.” As of now, prices for iBookstore textbooks are much lower than physical textbooks found in campus’ bookstores, so go check it out!

• Before the stress of midterms, papers, and club meetings begin, be sure to make the most of your free-time by enjoying it! Check out College Magazine’s list of Top 10 Inspiring Movies.

• Cover-letters and professional emails require clear sentences, proper grammar, and proficient writing skills. Here are 10 Easy Tips to Clean Up Your Writing from College Cures.

• Now for all of those fashionistas looking for what to wear to their next interview, CollegePrep is here to help. Their suggestion for this season is: color-blocking! Check out these accessories to go with your next pencil skirt or power suit. And to learn all about color-blocking, check out Color Blocking 101.

Observations of the Hipster Life

I spent last weekend at New York University, deemed by College Magazine as being the most hipster campus in the country. What is a hipster, you may ask? From what I’ve observed during my weekends in New York City, in my English classes at Rutgers, and from shopping (and listening to conversations) at my local Urban Outfitters, these are the five most prominent qualities I have noticed about the hipster life:

1) “Well, I think…”

Hipsters are not afraid to embrace the counterculture of whatever is going on mainstream. I appreciate articulate counterarguments on things ranging from the upcoming election to the best clothing stores in the nation.

Expert Advice: Beauty Tips from mark.

Recently, I was lucky enough to be put in touch with Kelsey, a mark. representative mentor. She helps train the women who sell mark. products (she also mentioned that this is a great job for girls our age because you can make your own hours! Hint. Hint.). More importantly, however, Kelsey knows what she’s talking about when it comes to fashion and beauty (just look at her picture!). Happily, I got to pick Kelsey’s brain a bit and she gave me some great beauty tips to share with all of you.
