Martin Luther King Jr. Day marked the first day of Service Week for NSCS chapters across the country. Chapters used their day off of school to participate in service events in their respective communities.
“Often, people underestimate the power that they have in being a donor… it saves people’s lives. I wanted to make sure our chapter was a part of this inspirational event,” said University of North Carolina at Charlotte NSCS Chapter President, Kirsti Williamson. That’s why her chapter started their week of service volunteering at their campus blood drive. Members manned registration tales, directed donors through the process, assisted with concessions, ensured donors were okay after giving blood and members donated blood themselves.
NSCS members from the Old Dominion University chapter volunteered for a mentoring project organized by Volunteer Hampton Roads. Each member that attended was paired with at-risk youth from the local community to help them create recess booklets as well as cards and cut outs for members of the military. “It felt great knowing that I can be a part of the people changing someone’s life” said Vice President of Community Service Chanmoly Seng.
The NSCS Chapter at The Ohio State University volunteered alongside The Ohio State Psychology Club to help Mid Ohio Furniture Bank prepare for their annual fundraiser. “Although we just moved couches and tables from one location to another, I was reminded that these pieces will enter a family’s house one day, making that house a home,” said Vice President of Community Service, Kerri Higginbotham, and, “Because NSCS spent some time helping at the Mid Ohio Furniture Bank, needy families will receive quality furniture that they can call their own. It is amazing to know that such a little thing can make such a big difference!”
