Think college is out of your reach? Think again. Each year Universities across the country host the annual National Society of Collegiate Scholars March 2 College Day. In 2011, almost 500 NSCS members participated in March to College Day events. While nearly 2,500 PACE students were able to gain first-hand experience in college life. It’s more than just the numbers – think of the ideas and opportunities not only presented, but also shared among all of those people! I think that’s rather inspiring in my humble opinion. Students of all ages embrace this day in hopes of not only guiding one another, but also in hopes of creating real change in education.

March to College Day takes place during the month of March and is considered the most extensive initiative of the Planning to Achieve Collegiate Excellence (PACE) Program. Though it differs from chapter to chapter, essentially the goal is to have students tour the campus, visit residence halls and attend lectures given by professors and/or prominent campus figures including student athletes, as well as university presidents and deans. The event brings students on campus to have a “day in the life” experience, helping them realize college is indeed a tangible reality.

After months of planning the University of Arizona (UA) showed off their Wildcat pride, seeking to inspire young students and promote higher education. The UA had a tremendously successful turnout this year, with over 230 middle school students participating in the event. These students were given a tour of the campus, had the opportunity to meet University athletes, as well as attend class lectures. By days end, middle school students welcomed everything from trivia to games and dancing – quite an excellent way to end the day! Not one student left empty handed, either. Every student went home with a backpack encompassing success books. For photos from the event visit the UA’s Facebook page here.

So, what can you do if you aren’t an NSCS member? Why not volunteer at a local school to help students with their homework, help a high school student with their college admission or scholarship essay, or even sign up to mentor a child this year? Are you an NSCS member, but your University chapter doesn’t hold an annual March to College Day? Why not contact your Member Engagement Manager and pledge to hold your March to College day on March 29, 2013!
