MAC's Korean Candy

Fall is approaching and with it comes the deeper, warmer colored cosmetics that lay in the back of our drawers. I’m here to report to you what the latest trends in makeup are. From the runway to the fall collections of department store cosmetics, here is the run down.

Ralph Lauren Fall 2011 Runway

One color that keeps popping up on the runway again and again, despite the change of the seasons, is orange. My personal favorite way to wear them is on the lips. Pick a warmer gold toned orange like NYX’s 507 or a reddish orange like MAC’s new Korean Candy. If you aren’t ready to try the lipstick, you could always start with a more sheer gloss like NARS’ Wonder lip gloss or NYX’s Orange Sparkle lip gloss.

Givenchy Fall 2011 Campaign

Givenchy Je veux la Lune Fall Collection

However, since it is fall, darker lips are also back. This means burgundy, plum, and wine colored lips. Chanel, Guerlain, Givenchy, and MAC all have a dark lip color in their fall collection. The question is “How dark can I go?” Obviously during the daytime a full on black lip will not be appropriate. I suggest trying out a plum or deep red gloss, or sheer lipstick, before you invest fully in vampire lips. Most drugstore lip colors will be sheer so you won’t have to worry about picking one too dark. CVS, Walmart, Sephora, MAC, etc. all have wonderful return policies. However if you are ready to take on your darker side try MAC’s Smoked Purple in their Fall 2011 MAC Me Over collection. I own the Bougainville gloss by NARS which I find to be the right balance of pigment and gloss.

Lancome Doll Lashes

A new trend, with the eyes is doll-like spider lashes. Try Lancôme’s new Hypnose Doll Lashes mascara or the newly released Scandal Queen mascara by Fairydrops or Maybelline Falsies mascara. These mascaras can give you that wide-eyed doll look without all the time and effort of lash glue (who wants to put on lashes before an 8AM class?). Of course you’ll need an eyelash curler to achieve this look though.

Pair your new spider lashes with some jewel toned eye shadows. The fall collections released by NARS, Make Up For Ever, Guerlain, and Estee Lauder all have lovely colors of emerald and sapphire. These colors will go together beautifully with the change of the seasons.

Dior Fall 2011 Campaign

Dior Blue Tie Makeup Collection

If you’re not attracted to jewel toned colors try a metallic silver blue color. This eye color is showing up in many campaigns and can be paired with a dark or nude lip. However, you must be careful to not apply this with a heavy hand and come out looking like a little girl playing with her makeup! I would suggest wearing this color on the inner part of your lids. It can be a nice twist to the classic smokey eye… almost like an icy, smokey eye.

Lancome Fall 2011 Campaign

The classics are always around. Lancôme is bringing back the sleek black winged eyeliner with the sultry red lips in their fall collection. The great thing about this look is that you can pick whichever products you want to achieve it. There is no specific “it” product. You could pick MAC’s Runaway red lipstick and pair it with their Blacktrack fluidline or Lancome’s Hold Up Red lipstick with their precision point Artliner or Revlon Cherry Ice lipstick with Maybelline gel eyeliner. It’s all up to you and your personal preference.

Bare Face & Bold Eyebrows

Lastly, my personal favorite is the bare face and bold brows look. Although this may sound like wearing no make up, in all honesty, I feel like I would end up wearing the most make up with this look! This is about a flawless complexion and nude lips. That means a dewy foundation, concealer, bold brows, contour, nude eye shadow, full lashes, and nude lips. Of course if you already have a clear complexion you wouldn’t be wearing that much makeup, it’s all about fitting it to your face and your needs. I would probably achieve this look with: Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer, MAC studio fix concealer, YSL touché éclat, Bobbi Brown eyebrow gel, Fairydrops waterproof Scandal Queen mascara, Benefit Hoola, and Revlon Soft nude lipstick. This is great for that “natural beauty” look. The trick is to know your skin well and what it needs. If you have dry skin, like me, powder will make it look cakey and you’ll instantly lose the “no make up” illusion.

All of these trends can be tailored to your tastes. Have fun with it and let your make up express your personality. I know I’ll be rocking some orange lips while sitting in my desktop multimedia class this fall!

Good luck with your back to school preparations. I’m sure you’ll look great!
