You don’t have to be in the middle of a full-blown panic attack for anxiety to be affecting you. Sometimes, you can feel your anxiety rise as life’s stressors put you through the wringer. If you need an easy way to bring your inner peace back to the forefront of your life, these tips might work for you!

1) Turn off the notifications on your phone.

If our attention is being diverted by dings and notifications, how are we supposed to remain focused? Studies have shown that spending time on our smartphones rewires our brain’s chemistry, flooding us with the stress hormone known as cortisol. Do yourself a favor, and turn them off! Even turning off the sound will instantly bring you a little relief.

2) Repeat a positive phrase.

It might sound silly, but taking control of your thoughts can be as easy as focusing on a positive phrase. When your mind wants to take you to the dark side, show it who’s boss by finding words that speak to you. Saying something like “good things are coming” over and over again can put your mind back in the right place.

3) Name five things you’re grateful for in life.

When anxiety is calling, it’s easy to get caught up in self-doubt or fear. Another way to take control of those racing thoughts is to focus on the good things in your life. Everyone has a reason to be grateful! Whether it’s having a great friend or a roof over your head, listing the positive things can calm you.

4) Go for a walk.

If your mind is being stubborn and it just can’t let the anxiety go, put your body to work. According to The Anxiety and Depression Association of America, walking for only five minutes kicks off the release of endorphins. When endorphins make their way into your brain, they flood you with feelings of well-being and bring the level of the stress hormone cortisol down.

5) Look in the mirror and compliment yourself.

This one might be tough for some of you, but it’s one of the best ways to combat feelings of anxiety! Find a mirror and look yourself in the eyes. While you’re there, remind yourself how far you’ve come, where you’re going and why you’re an amazing soul. Once you’ve given yourself a pep talk, you’ll be ready to face whatever challenges might come your way – with a more positive mindset.

As always, you should consult your physician about any prolonged anxiety you are experiencing. But, practicing these tips might give you some immediate relief. Just remember that you’re in control, and you’ll be feeling better in no time!
