Student Budget Worthy Adventures: Bike Europe

Send to Kindle

There are many advantages to being a student. I’m not talking about free pizza on campus or the world’s permission to shirk reality’s responsibility for 4 consecutive years, but rather about the ability to sniff out adventure on a dime.

As a student, I have backpacked sans-electronics through eastern Europe purely on the direction and charades of locals who have only learned English by watching undubbed episodes of Walker Texas Ranger. I’ve had half-price, day old bread on the steps of churches in Italy and hitched a ride from a Greek and a Bosnian in search of a Master’s degree in Germany. Life is certainly open for the taking if we only open our minds to it and jump right in. Cliché as that sounds, I’ve had more adventures than I can count and they keep pouring in.

Eco Geek BLACKBURN 1Yesterday, my student budget and hunger for a new undertaking led me a sore “Popo,” (German slang for “bum”), a vegetarian’s nightmare and sand between my toes.

Eco Geek BLACKBURN 3Ladies and gentlemen, my first European Bike Tour. According to my rough sketches on Google maps, this journey with 8 Germanophones (German speakers) but 4 different passport origins took us approximately 22 kilometers (13.67 miles), over 3 hours through the hills and small cities, and to 3 sparkling lakes! In case you were wondering, the rocky descents to the lakes are where both the soreness and the sand came into play.

Eco Geek BLACKBURN 2

Though we numbered only 6 at the end of our journey, we arrived at the home of a local friend of mine, Anna, and were warmly greeted by 7 hungry friends freshly arrived by car. For the next 6 hours, we feasted on all sorts of German delicacies in flesh, flour, potato and hops formats. While struggling to switch between French, German and English speaking, I made several new acquaintances and filled my belly to the brim. Unfortunately, these festivities went so late that I had missed the last train home and biking would’ve been madness. After my Swiss friend heroically tried to fit my giant bicycle into his not-so-giant vehicle, I ended up having a lovely 12 year old version of a slumber party with my hostess, chatting far into the wee hours of the morning until we both passed out mid-sentence.

How did this adventure hit my pocketbook?
Free entrance to the lakes, free flowers in the fields, free sunshine, free laughter, 9€ for the 24 hour Deutsche Bahn Bike Rental and 4€ for food and beer pitch. Needless to say, I crashed into my apartment this morning with a sleepy grin on my face, just 13€ ($16) absent from my wallet but incalculably richer in experience.

-Otto-Maigler See: They offer a cafe and white-sand beaches with volleyball courts

-Bleibtreusee: This lake has a massive wake-boarding course that resembles a ski lift on the water

-Liblarer See: Surrounded by beautiful forest, this lake is quite extensive and is perfect for a day in the water.”

Now What? Tips on Life After Graduation

Send to Kindle

Graduating from college is an accomplishment worth celebrating. But why is the graduation party so often followed by a hangover? (Not that kind.) Although most students feel elation at the prospect of entering the “real world” after 17 years of school, the decision about what comes next can also be paralyzing. Pressure from parents and peers can lead to anxiety, and many grads who don’t have a clear sense of direction continue to party through their 20s without figuring out what they actually want to do

This infographic may help you to navigate the professional and psychological pitfalls of post-grad life:

Life After Graduation= Brought to you by USC Social Work Graduate Programs

Do I Need to Go To Grad School?

Not every career requires a graduate degree. In the health care sector, you can earn a good living in plenty of jobs that require only two- or four-year degrees, like a dental hygienist. Some fields, like social work, a graduate degree is a requirement for licensure, while in others, like computer science, a graduate degree can help you to snag a higher starting salary.

The decision to return to school shouldn’t just be about money. It should also be about stimulating yourself intellectually and finding work that you really care about. A graduate program can open up a wide variety of career options that are fulfilling both monetarily and personally.

Taking the Next Steps

Don’t allow yourself to become mired in anxiety or depression about the future if you can help it. Consider what you need to do to make yourself happy and to move forward with your life. Allow going back to school to open doors for you or find a fulfilling job that doesn’t require a master’s degree.

Regardless of whether or not you decide to go to graduate school, it’s important to consider your options and find a sense of direction after graduation. Completing college should be a milestone in your educational and professional life that you look back on proudly.

Get Fit During Summer Break!

Send to Kindle

FeetviewThe spring semester is coming to an end which has us thinking about part time jobs and days spent by the pool. Perhaps you are like me and stuck to a workout regimen until spring break, but prepping for finals left little energy or time to continue working out. Summer break gives us three months to relax, and after a stressful week of finals, the mental vacation summer offers means we can also work out all the stress from the school year. If you are going home this summer, and won’t have access to your school’s state of the art work out facility, you can still get into shape.

trainersRunning

I know, I know you hate to run. You would rather do anything else to work out as long as you didn’t have to run! I’m sorry to say it, but there is no better substitute for this calorie burner, stress reliever, and body toning workout. Put on a comfortable pair of tennis shoes and hit the concrete. If you are just starting to get into shape, alternate running in intervals for five minutes with ten minutes of brisk walking. Each day you go running, add a minute to the time you are running by subtracting the minutes you are walking. Before you know it, you will be able to run for thirty minutes straight.

Tip:

If you get shin splints after running check the brand of your tennis shoes. I ran cross country in high school, and my doctor told me changing the brand of your exercise shoes (ex: Nike to New Balance) season to season you will increase your chance of forming shin splints. So pick the brand that fits you best and stick with it.

yogapicStretching

One of the most common mistakes people make when they are trying to get in shape is forgetting to stretch. Stretching is just as important as working out. Not only does it prevent injuries, it also elongates your muscles so that you have a nice lean form. Stretching also helps you cool down from a workout, and it helps you feel relaxed. If you don’t want to spend 30 minutes doing yoga, you can always focus on your hamstrings, your calves, your arms, and your oblique’s. If you are running, those are the main muscles that tend to become tense.

fruitsEating

Don’t worry; I am not going to offer you any diet tips, but to get into shape you should enjoy a well-balanced diet. Take advantage of all the summer fruits that are beginning to harvest; For example, strawberries, blackberries, and peaches. These are my go-to foods when I am baking summer cobblers, and they are a good alternative to junk food if you need a snack!
