Meet our NSCS Scholar of the Week, Natasha Infante! Natasha is an incoming senior at the University of South Florida, where she is a Biology major.
Natasha’s favorite NSCS experience was being a mentor in the Spring 2017 Torch & Laurel Mentorship Program, which paired NSCS members with scholars in the NSCS high school honors program, The Society of Torch & Laurel. “I was able to give my advice and help a high school senior and attempt to ease the transition from high school to college. I shared information on topics such as time management, study habits, academic and career resources, extracurricular activities, and other themes to benefit my mentee,” she says. “I had a wish that someone would guide me and show me the ropes when I was a high school senior who was first entering college. I did in fact find a mentor. The NSCS president of my college’s chapter guided me, so I wanted to do the same for someone else. Since having a mentor as a college freshman helped me, I wanted to pay it forward and help a student whose situation I was in just a few years ago.”
In order to boost her confidence in public speaking, Natasha purposefully volunteers at places that require public speaking and guest interaction. “At an aquarium where I volunteer, I give educational presentations about sea turtles and marine life to guests,” she says. “I also like to do other things that push me out of my comfort zone. Over spring break, I took an alternative breaks service trip to Guatemala to help build stoves in the homes of families who needed them. I don’t speak Spanish, so not only was I in a different country, but there was also a language barrier. This drove me to try to learn basic Spanish, and being in a different place inspired me to explore and learn more about the country and its culture.”
For her guidance as a mentor and her efforts to broaden her horizons, Natasha is our Scholar of the Week! Congratulations!
