Meet our NSCS Scholar of the Week, Marissa Bivins! Marissa is a senior at the University of Michigan, where she is a Biochemistry major.

Marissa’s favorite NSCS experience is making blankets for the kids at Mott Children’s Hospital. “It is a great way to give some homey comforts for a speedy recovery,” she says. “The blankets are always adorable and cozy, while also giving us scholars a little bit of time to be crafty!”

Last summer Marissa had the opportunity to go to the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Labs just outside of Chicago to collect data for her honors thesis. “It was an amazing opportunity, as more and more labs are collecting data from the synchrotron remotely and no longer travel. It felt like a space shuttle launch site!” she says. “But scientists have a little fun there: there are adult-sized trikes available to get around the more than 3,622-foot circumference of the building. I may have done a couple of laps around 2 a.m. while collecting data.”

For her efforts to help others and progress scientific inquiry, Marissa is our Scholar of the Week! Congratulations!
