Scholar of the Week: Dennis Barden

Scholar of the Week: Dennis Barden

Meet our NSCS Scholar of the Week, Dennis Barden! Dennis is a student at University of Phoenix where he majors in information technology.

As a member of NSCS, Dennis’ favorite experience is being surrounded by NSCS’s members who honor the pillars of scholarship, leadership and service. “This was a tremendous first semester as an NSCS member! I am surrounded by others who are passionate about their education, about becoming leaders and helping others. My favorite thing about NSCS, as I get to know everyone, is that I see we’ve each overcome great hardships. I was homeless for a number of years, so being back in school was a tough transition,” said Dennis.

“I never thought I would be here, rocking a 3.8 GPA with honors, on a dual-degree program. NSCS is full of students just like me who have learned to show strength despite extreme adversity. It motivates me, and inspires me, to keep striving for greatness when I see others around me who also strive for the same thing.”

Honoring the NSCS pillars of scholarship and leadership, Dennis is dedicated to his studies and is also in the process of starting up his own company.

“I spent years thinking that I could not afford college, that the best I deserved was home in Texas working for minimum wage, and sleeping in a van that barely ran. I moved to Colorado five years ago with $58 and space on a friend’s floor to sleep. Now, I am currently developing a business with my sister to help mitigate start-up costs for small businesses by migrating to, and integrating, with digital platforms,” said Dennis.

“When I graduate, I plan to spend my life opening businesses that share 100% of its profits with the employees who actually do the work. I want to change how America thinks of business by helping to build and grow jobs, and eliminating poverty for future generations. Change will come if we make it.”

Congratulations Dennis and keep up the great work.
